Prof. Zuidema Gives Lecture at Reformation Conference Devoted to Peter Martyr Vermigli
In August 2007 Montréal's McGill University was host to the third
international conference of the Peter Martyr Vermigli society. Peter
Martyr was an Italian monk who was born in 1499 and fled persecution
in Italy in 1542 to join the Protestant reformers in the north. From
1542 until his death in 1562 he served in successive academic posts in
Strasbourg, Oxford, and Zurich. Peter Martyr left behind a
significant contribution to Reformed scholarship and showed learning
in answering the burning questions of his day.
Dr. Zuidema presented a paper concerning the influence of Peter Martyr
on the French Reformation. This as yet untouched field of research
showed the continuing legacy of Peter Martyr even well after his
death. Besides this presentation Dr. Zuidema contributed a
comprehensive bibliography of Peter Martyr studies which was published
before the conference. Dr. Zuidema is also revising his doctoral
thesis on Peter Martyr's theology for publication in 2008 (D.V.)
